What helps after knee surgery, week by week

A forearm crutch leaning against a wall

After knee surgery, the first goal is not strength. It is getting the swelling down and the knee fully straight again.

Weeks one to two

Elevation, cooling and lymphatic drainage reduce swelling. Gentle movement keeps the joint from stiffening.

Weeks three to six

Now strength work starts, carefully at first and then with more load. Most patients walk without crutches by week four.
